Self-care is a big buzzword at the moment. We see it all over Instagram: 12-step Korean skincare routines, 6-hour hikes on a Sunday morning, and rainbow bath bombs with so much glitter you’re sure it would give you an instant yeast infection.
I’m here to tell you that self-care is essential, but it doesn’t have to include 87 steps and a self-inflicted yeast infection. Self-care is simply carving out space in your schedule to let your mind and body rest. After all, we aren’t sex robots. This is especially important if you’re a touring escort who has long days with lots of clients squished into your limited time in a city. You’ll actually find that you are more productive and find work more manageable if you allow yourself some time to chill.
Now, I know it’s tricky when you are busy. However, research shows that even just 15 minutes of journaling or 20 minutes of meditation can impact things like self-esteem, productivity and the number of errors we make at work. Self-care doesn’t have to take long, but it will have a massive impact on your life and wellbeing. Check out my 5 favourite self-care tips for on-the-go sex workers.
Self-care can be as simple as getting your booty of your office chair (or work bed!) and moving for 10-minutes. Go for a solo stroll around your neighbourhood, sign up to a gym class, or do an online yoga video. Leave your phone in another room, so you can have this time all to yourself. Even a short burst of exercise will wake you up and give you a boost of energy.
As I said, self-care doesn’t have to include 87 steps and a self-inflicted yeast infection. Sometimes it’s just setting up small, straightforward ways to care for yourself. Do a little planning at the beginning of your week, and head to the supermarket to get a few healthy snacks and meals you can prep ahead of time.
It’s crucial to have healthy food to munch on between those last-minute bookings, ESPECIALLY if you’re on tour. There’s always that one client who is late or overstays and completely stuffs up your perfectly organised schedule. Plan ahead so you don’t get stuck in that UberEats rut – it’s terrible for both your body and your wallet (been there, done that).
Today we are so consumed with digital everything and it can be tough to set the screens down for 5 minutes, let alone 20. We are so busy replying to clients and Tweeting and posting Instagram stories, and let me tell you, it is TIRING. We give so much energy to clients before they even walk through the door. You need a break. And you’ll feel so much better for it. Trust me.
Now, I know it’s not that easy to switch off your phone when you have a business that relies on you replying to client enquiries. But I’m not saying you need to have your phone off all day – just turn it off (or aeroplane mode it) for a few minutes. 20 minutes is the time it takes to take a shower, or make a quick meal, or do a meditation, or go for a walk around the block. Clients can survive without an instant response from you, and I promise (I promise!) that giving yourself these sorts of breaks will allow you to make more money in the long run. Trust me and give it a try, and see if anything shifts at all.
Still finding it difficult to commit to a digital detox? One great way to FORCE yourself to unplug for a bit is to force yourself to ditch your phone and relax for an hour at a massage, a facial or a manicure, or ANY experience that is a no-phone zone. I recently had a float tank experience for the first time and let me tell you, it was BLISS. And you can’t have your phone on when you’re in a pitch-black pool with headphones in.
To run your business well you need to take care of yourself first. And what happens when you take care of yourself and feel good? You achieve more, focus better, and hit more goals.
We live in a society that is go go go all the time. We are on Instagram from the minute we open our eyes until we go to sleep. We drink coffee in takeaway cups while rushing madly to our next appointment of the day. We meet friends for a run or a yoga class. We rarely take time to SLOW DOWN and treat ourselves.
Next time you go pick up your regular coffee, go inside and sit at a table for 20 minutes, rather than opting for takeaway. Sit down, relax, savour that overpriced caffeine for once rather than gulping it down at lighting-speed, and read a magazine or people-watch for a few minutes. Again, self-care doesn’t have to be something that needs to take all day and involve a 27 step Korean skincare routine. I’m talking about small pockets in your day where you can create a moment of calm that is just for YOU.
So, where in your calendar can you create a little more you-time? Your wellness is the foundation of running a killer business, so start treating it like all your other non-negotiable priorities. Whether it’s an hour massage or a 5-minute walk around the block, you deserve to take care of you.

Disclaimer: I cannot, and do not, speak for all sex workers. I speak from my experience of working in a legal brothel and as an independent escort in Australia. Where possible I try to be inclusive. However, I can’t relay every experience of sex work – especially if I haven’t experienced it myself.
I use affiliate links for some products in my blogs. This is an easy way for me to track which products you enjoy. I do earn a (very) small commission from this, depending on the product. All products recommended to you are products I truly use and enjoy.
